Amazon Day September 10

A new book which prominently features Genny Nelson and Sisters Of The Road, The Soul of a Leader (Crossroad, 2008) by Margaret Benefiel, is about to be launched. A special Amazon.com promotion benefiting Sisters is occurring on September 10, and the author will donate $1 for every book sold on that day to Sisters! It will also increase the book’s visibility and help get Sisters’ story out more widely into the world!

Ringlers Pub Friends and Family Night

Half of all proceeds from food and beverages sales on Monday, September 29th from 5:00 pm to close (2:30 am!) at McMenamins’ Ringlers Pub will go directly to Sisters’ programs.

Ringlers is located at 1332 W. Burnside in Portland.  5:00 to 9:00 pm all ages are welcome and 9:00 to close is for those who are age 21 and over only. And there’s free pool all night! For more info on Ringlers Pub go to http://www.mcmenamins.com or call (503) 222-0627.

Thanksgiving Day Karma Yoga

Celebrate with Bhaktishop in deep gratitude by donating your time, your love, and your intentions through practicing yoga with them on Thanksgiving Day, November 27 - and the classes will benefit Sisters! “Before the football, family, and pie, get in here and celebrate!” Bhaktishop is at 2500 SE 26th Ave., Portland, at the corner of SE Division St.

Save the Date: Hoedown – Friday, October 10 ‘08

Pardners, join us on Friday, October 10th, 2008 (note the date change) from 6:30-10pm at the Portland Art Museum’s Kridel Ballroom for our biggest fundraiser of the year!  Last year’s Hoedown & Auction grossed $137,277 for the good work of Sisters.

The amazing Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet featuring Béla Fleck with Casey Driessen and Ben Sollee will perform at Hoedown. This American acoustic group features Abigail Washburn on banjo and vocals; Béla Fleck on banjo; Casey Driessen on violin; and Ben Sollee on cello. The wonderful Casey Neill band will be performing at the beginning of the evening.

The Kridel Ballroom is located at the Portland Art Museum at 1119 SW Park Avenue, on the third floor; it is wheelchair accessible.

Personalist Center Events

Our Personalist Center , located next to our cafe at 137 NW Davis, hosts a number of free, cross-class community events. Please join us:

  • Knitting Circle Wednesdays. Join us from 10:00 am to 12:30 every Wednesday. All skill levels welcome, basic materials provided.
  • Nonviolence Training: Open to all. Contact Lauren, below, for the schedule. These trainings variously cover: the roots of nonviolence philosophy; identifying acts of violence; issues of power and class; and practical skills of interrupting violence.
  • Civic Action Group usually meets the second and fourth Saturday, 12-3pm. People with experience with homelessness are welcome to attend. Contact Patrick for more info: (503) 222-5694 ext. 13, or email Patrick at sistersoftheroad.org.
  • Skill Share! Early this summer, we hope to begin a series of skills trainings taught and chosen by cafe customers and volunteers.  Have a skill you’d like to teach?  Contact Lauren!
